MARUM Supervision Workshop

How to manage the relationship between supervisor and doctoral researcher and support research independence

In part 1 of this workshop, you will get hands-on tools for how supervisors can collaborate effectively with their candidates.

Part 2 of this workshop focuses on the ‘delicate balance’ between supervisor support and the independence of the (post-)doctoral researcher. On the one hand, supervisors are expected to provide sufficient guidance for their doctoral researchers to produce high-quality research within the expected timeframe. On the other hand, supervisors need to facilitate their development as independent researchers by allowing them to experience their own learning journey – including making mistakes. In this session, supervisors will receive concrete, research-based advice on how to navigate this complex set of roles.
