Report of GLOMAR PhD student Junhui Xing about his participation in the 11th International Conference of Gas in Marine Sediments, Nice, France, 4 - 7 September 2012

The 11th International Conference of Gas in Marine Sediments is a traditional and interdisciplinary conference, which intends to bring together scientists from various disciplines in order to discuss current knowledge and future programs in methane-rich in marine and lake environments.

In the conference, the sessions included imaging sub-seafloor gas structures by seismic studies, geophysical and geological expression of gas structures, seafloor emissions to the water column and the atmosphere, which were closely related to my research work. The other sessions were also beneficial to extending my knowledge in other disciplines, such as subsurface fluid flow, cold seeps, geochemical and thermal gradients. During the conference, I presented a poster “Interaction of gas migration, hydrate formation and sedimentary processes in the Kerch flare area, Black Sea”, which successfully attracted some famous experts, such as Dr. Ingo Klaucke, who is the expert in seismic research of Black Sea and from GEOMAR. I got some positive feedback and comments about the sedimentary processes from him, which are very helpful to my research work. More than 90 oral and poster presentations were given in this conference, and more seismic research results of gas were shown than last conference in Russia. It’s a nice experience to join the gas in marine sediments conference again.

I really appreciate the support from GLOMAR so that I have the opportunity to present my PhD work in this conference.
