Report of GLOMAR PhD student Isabelle Schulz about her participation in the Planet under Pressure Conference, London, UK, 24 - 29 March 2012

The 2012 Planet Under Pressure conference was intended to be a major opportunity to link global-change science in a two-way engagement with the wide range of other stakeholders working towards global sustainability. Researchers and academics from many disciplines, policymakers, development agencies, Industry, NGO’s, media all these different stakeholders were invited to take part in the discussion. “The aim of the conference was to act as a platform to strengthen and enlarge the global-change research community and mark a move to a new vision for global-change research”.

The topic of my PhD thesis, Ocean Iron fertilization (OIF), which has been in the geo-engineering discussion as CO2 sequestration mechanism, fit perfectly the conference emphasis. The focus of the conference was on providing solutions to take the pressure from our planet. OIF is a topic relevant for the global change debate. With the chance of a poster presentation it was possible for me to introduce this topic to the interdisciplinary audience with the science perspective. I was able to present and explain the latest results of my research in the session of “Current and future trends in CO2 emissions and sinks“ (Theme A, day 1). Dr. Chris Vivian from the Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (www.cefas.co.uk) visited me at my poster. He is Scientific advisor on impacts of human activities on the marine environment. Dr. Chris Vivian was also the Chairman of the Scientific Group under the London Convention and London Protocol who developed an agreement on adequate regulation of ocean iron fertilization. We had a fruitfull discussion about my data and iron fertilization in general.

Overall these 5 days were very interesting and constructive, it was a first step towards international collaboration amongst the different disciplines. I enjoyed both the oral and poster presentations, from which I learned a lot.

I really appreciated the dialogue with the international and interdisciplinary community and gained quite a few new perspectives for my further career. I appreciate the support of GLOMAR for giving me the opportunity to take part in this conference.
