PANGAEA® - Data Publisher for Earth & Environmental Science

PANGAEA - Data Publisher for Earth & Environmental Science is jointly operated by the Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) and the Center for Marine Environmental Sciences (MARUM) at the University of Bremen.

The services provided by the long-term archive and data library PANGAEA include long-term archiving of data, data publication, dissemination, and scientific data management. Georeferenced and quality-controlled data and metadata are archived following the "Recommendations of the Commission on Professional Self-Regulation in Science" to safeguard good scientific practice and the OECD "Principles and Guidelines for Access to Research Data from Public Funding."

PANGAEA is a member of the ICSU World Data System (WDS), created by the International Council for Science (ICSU). Jointly hosted by MARUM and AWI, PANGAEA operates as a permanent facility, guaranteeing the long-term availability and accessibility of archived data and metadata in secure and machine-readable formats. PANGAEA is a CoreTrustSeal-certified repository.

Each dataset includes a bibliographic citation and is persistently identified using a Digital Object Identifier (DOI), allowing it to be identified, shared, published, and cited. Based on the DOI registry, datasets can also be retrieved from library catalogues or cross-referenced with traditional publications.

A successful collaboration with Elsevier, along with the corresponding technical implementation, enables the cross-referencing of scientific publications and datasets archived as supplements to these publications on the web pages of ScienceDirect and PANGAEA. A direct link brings the ScienceDirect user from the publication to the datasets archived as supplements at PANGAEA (e.g., https://doi.org/10.1016/j.gloplacha.2011.06.006).

PANGAEA is also the recommended repository for data supplements to Elsevier publications in three subject areas (Agricultural and Biological Sciences, Earth & Planetary Sciences and Environmental Sciences). The "Guidelines for Authors" of about 500 journals recommend depositing supplementary data in PANGAEA and emphasise the use of cross-linking.
