Increasing computer capacity enables the increasing utilizating of numerical process simulation techniques to simulate complex geo-processes. Common to all numerical models is the need of High Performance Computing (HPC), with hundreds to thousands of processors working in parallel to handle the massive amounts of data and complex calculations required. In some cases, we are not so much interested in simulating a perfect Earth System, but rather in performing across-scale sensitivity tests to gain information about how model components respond to changes in one or more specific parameters. To speed up analyses, in addition to our mechanistic numerical models, we also use deep neural network techniques to approximate detailed process calculations through emulator approaches.
