Report of GLOMAR PhD student Simon Jungblut about his participation in the YOUMARES 6 conference in Bremen, Germany from 16 - 18 September 2015

In September 2015, I was able to participate in the YOUMARES 6 conference in Bremen. This conference is a platform for YOUng MARine RESearchers to present their projects such as thesis work, research projects, etc. About 130 participants in 10 sessions and 29 posters proof that YOUMARES has become a steady event in Germany´s marine research. Although attributed to an overarching theme, the spectrum of topics is impressive.

In this year´s YOUMARES I, together with a colleague from marine botany, hosted a session entitled: “From invasive species to novel ecosystems”. This privilege included the publication of a small review on the session topic in the conference proceedings, the invitation of one speaker, choosing the presenters and moderating the session.

Over all, hosting a conference session was a valuable experience for me. I worked closely together with my co-host on the review which broadened my knowledge on species introduction mechanisms in general. We were able to involve Dr. Stephan Gollasch, a leading expert for species introductions via ship ballast water, as the invited speaker of our session. He was the first speaker of our session. The following speakers were ordered like a bottom-up sequence of organization levels: case study, comparisons between native and invasive congeners, community effects and ecosystem modelling. All presentations were of high quality and I enjoyed moderating the session.

I herewith want to motivate people to participate or to host a session at upcoming YOUMARES conferences. GLOMAR students of all research topics can participate as this conference is not restricted to biological topics. In the end, even such a small-scale and familial conference provides a platform to improve one´s communication and presentation skills and is an excellent networking platform.
