Report of GLOMAR PhD student Mingming Li about her participation in the Ocean Sciences Meeting, Salt Lake City, USA, 20 - 24 February 2012

The Ocean Sciences Meeting is held every two years and took place between the 20th and 24th, February this year in Salt Lake City, Utah, USA. The OSM 2012 covered about 150 sessions with more than 4,000 participates.

On the last day of the conference I made an oral presentation of the latest result of my work under the title “Estimate of diapycnal mixing from hydrographic surveys in the subpolar North Atlantic” within the session “090: Enhanced Regions of Mixing in the Coastal and Deep Ocean”. Although it was in the afternoon of the last day in the meeting, with relative smaller audiences, I still got some useful feedback from other oceanographers, which not only inspired my work but also enhanced my confidence in the academic practice.

During the conference, I also participated some other sessions, such as 032: The Arctic and Subpolar North Atlantic as the Pacemakers for Climate Change, 068: Air-Sea Interactions in Western Boundary Current Systems and Marginal Seas, 097: Mixing and Transport Due to Nonlinear Internal Gravity, which broadened my views of ocean sciences.

I enjoyed both the oral and poster presentations, from which I learned a lot and I was grateful to be acquainted with other oceanographers. I appreciate the support from GLOMAR to give me the opportunity to take part in this conference.
