Report of GLOMAR PhD student Janna Köhler about her participation in the Ocean Sciences Meeting, Salt Lake City, USA, 20 - 24 February 2012

The Ocean Sciences Meeting takes place every second year and is one of the most important conferences in the field of physical oceanography. This year’s meeting with more than 4000 participants was held in Salt Lake City from the 20th to the 24th of February. In over 175 sessions latest research results were presented and discussed on a high level basis. Among others this meeting especially assembles leading researchers in the field of internal waves and mixing which makes it very important for my own research.

Thanks to the support of GLOMAR I was able to attend this meeting and to present a poster entitled “Temporal variability of the generation on internal waves by the Deep Western Boundary Current at 16°N“ with my latest results to many experts in the field of internal waves and mixing. This not only enhanced my visibility within the scientific community but also provided interesting and fruitful discussions.

Sessions such as e.g. “Mixing and Transport Due to Nonlinear Internal Gravity waves“ and “Enhanced Regions of Mixing in the Coastal and Deep Ocean“ yielded valuable insights into ongoing research directly related to my PhD project. A huge number of other talks gave a good overview over a variety of other research areas such as Eddies or the role of the arctic and subpolar North Atlantic in climate change. Poster sessions provided a relaxed but also concentrated atmosphere for discussions with experts as well as with other young scientists about new research aspects and measurement techniques.

Overall this was a very interesting, instructive week full of new insights and experiences and I would like to thank GLOMAR for the financial support.
