Report of GLOMAR PhD student Guangchao Zhuang about his participation in the Gordon Research Seminar and Conference on Organic Geochemistry, Holderness, NH, USA, 28 July - 3 August 2012

The biennial Gordon Research Conferences are the world's premier scientific platform for scientists to discuss their latest work and future challenges. For the Organic Geochemistry session, about 200 attendees from all over the world gathered to present the recent innovations and analytical approaches on molecular-level to global-scale biogeochemical processes involved in organic matter exchange between the biosphere and geosphere. A 2-day seminar before the GRC provided the opportunity for graduate students and post-docs to discuss their current research with their peers and build informal networks.

The seminar and conference were exciting for me because I enjoyed and benefitted a lot from them. In the first place, the invited and reputed speakers conveyed the latest progress perfectly within their specialty. From these lectures, I updated my knowledge on the frontier and state-of-the-art research in the field of organic geochemistry, which would be helpful for me to understand my current project. Secondly, I presented my poster, discussed my project with peers and senior scientists, and obtained some feedbacks and suggestions from them. The discussion atmosphere during the conference was impressive and the attendees can interact with others fully and freely. Moreover, I also shared my ideas with others for their posters from my perspective. Last but not least, I developed new network from the conference, and knew some scientists from different institutes. Particularly, I have a deep discussion with Prof. Chuanlun Zhang, who is from Georgia University and Tongji University. We talked about the possible cooperation in the future, and I was invited to participate in his cruises to investigate the biogeochemistry of porewater in marine sediment. In addition, I also visited Roger Summon’s lab in MIT and Ann Pearson’s lab in Harvard University and met several colleagues there after the conference.

In a word, it is nice experience for me to join such a wonderful and excellent conference. And I sincerely thank GLOMAR for the financial support.
