Report of GLOMAR PhD student Charlotte Kleint about her participation in the Ocean Science Meeting, Honolulu, Hawaii, 23 - 28 February 2014

The Ocean Sciences Meeting (OSM) 2014 in Honolulu, Hawaii, represents one of the most important international conferences focussing on marine science disciplines, amongst others marine geochemistry, which reflects my personal scientific focus. During my Ph.D., I am studying the organic metal complexation of Cu and Fe at shallow hydrothermal vent systems.

With nearly 6000 participants, the OSM is a really large conference. Due to the international importance, the conference experienced a large attendance of great scientists. By joining the conference, I got the unique chance to meet numerous scientists working in my field of study (Fe- and Cu- complexation in seawater, trace metal biochemistry, analytical evaluation methods, especially voltammetry).

My poster was part of the session: “Advances in approaches to assess metal-binding organic ligands and perspectives on the impacts of ligands on metal-biota interactions in the oceans”. Since it deals with organic metal complexation in the ocean, it fits perfectly to my Ph.D. project. All talks and poster presentations given during this session and related sessions were of great interest and importance to me and gave me additional knowledge in organic metal complexation, as well as voltammetric measurement techniques.

The exchange of ideas and experiences, including different method improvements or new sample treatments helped me to improve the scientific quality of my study and to extend my international scientific network.

I want to thank GLOMAR for funding my participation at this conference.
