Modern Dinocyst Key
Biecheleria baltica
Zonneveld, K.A.F. and Pospelova V. (2015). A determination key for modern dinoflagellate cysts. Palynology 39 (3), 387- 407.
Field characteristics
Cyst of Biecheleria baltica (Kremp et al., 2005) Moestrup et al., 2009
Field characteristics:
Spherical cysts covered with numerous solid short orthogonal protusions. The numerous alveolar vesicles that are typical for the motile can be reflected on the cyst wall. Archeopyle unknown
Dimensions: 20 - 30 µm
Stratigraphic range: Recent
Comparison with other species:
Cyst of Biecheleria baltica differ from those of Biecheleria cincta in being larger and not having a round archeopyle. It differs from the other transparant species with solid processes in having small spines that are not acuminate, branched or conical.
It is observed in the Baltic and probably related to low saline surface water conditions.
