High resolution imaging techniques are used for the spatially resolved analysis of sediments and other samples on the µm-scale. The distribution of molecular biomarkers and proxies is obtained by laser desorption ionization (LDI) coupled to ultra-high resolution mass spectrometry (FT-ICR-MS), and, for example, allows paleoenvironmental reconstruction with unprecedented resolution.
