The 6th International Conference on Environmental Science and Technology (EST) took place at the Hilton Convenience Center in Houston from June 25-29, 2012. The objective of the EST 2012 was to provide a major interdisciplinary forum for presenting new approaches from relevant areas of environmental science and engineering and to foster integration of the latest developments in scientific research into engineering applications. The conference comprised 600 platform and 100 poster presentations, which were organized into sessions that addressed a variety of disciplines and technologies.

The sessions were chaired by internationally recognized leaders in environmental sciences and technologies. The various presentation topics were organised into several technical sessions including: Sediments, Environmental analysis, and Measurements and Environmental modeling. Within the session ‘Environmental Modeling’, I had the opportunity to present my numerical simulations on heavy mineral enrichments in an oral presentation entitled: “A numerical approach to quantify selective sorting of heavy mineral assemblages” to a board audience.

A side program offered the opportunity to visit the National Space Agency NASA, where a detailed introduction to the origins of our cosmos was given. In particular, the introduction to the sediments of the moon was interesting to me.

Immediately following the conference in Houston, I attended the 33rd International Conference on Coastal Engineering (ICCE 2012), which was hosted in Santander, Cantabria, Spain from July 1-6 2012. The conference was organized under the auspices of the Coastal Engineering Research Council (CERC) of Coasts, Oceans, Ports and Rivers Institute (COPRI) of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). The conference gave a unique opportunity for knowledge exchange and the exploitation of professional networks. Due to an extensive program, more than 150 poster and 500 oral presentations from 30 countries were presented, which gave an excellent overview into the most recent advances. Due to the very open-minded community, fruitful discussions on the work of all participants evolved constantly.

During the conference, technical tours such as a detailed introduction to the sediment transport processes occurring at the local beaches were offered to all participants. Technical sessions included for example, Sediment Transport and Numerical Models, Sediment Transport Processes, and Sediment Transport Case Studies.

Within the session: “Managing Coastal Erosion”, I had the chance to present my most recent work entitled: “How is mixed sediment protected from erosion? Using a numerical approach” during a 5 min oral poster presentation. Following the 5 minute presentation, I had the opportunity to further explain the findings to colleagues from around the whole world in the 2 hour long poster session. For my efforts, I was really pleased to have been awarded the 2nd place Outstanding Poster Award at the conference and I came back to Bremen with a new E-reader as the prize!
